War scenes from Kitchen Windows

Watercolour + Fineliner

'War scenes from the Kitchen window’ was a project focused on editorial illustration. The main focus was to illustrate the unfortunate events that took place in Ukraine at war. As well as to illustrate how people can be pro-active and offer ways to help those in need in Ukraine through small details hidden within the illustrations themselves.

The illustrations work as a form of visual journalism. They share awareness and keep audiences updated on the war, as well as offering ways to directly help, with visual clues and details on the window sill. Example detail: tinned food to donate to refugees. The use of kitchen windows as the point of view for the war scenes are referenced from houses in the UK. This places an element of familiarity to the audience as it allows the viewer to imagine what their life would be like if the war scenes were outside their window. These illustrations visualise the thought of ‘this could be us'...
